Winning Points With Your Significant Other

Just about anyone who is in a relationship can cover the basics: flowers for a birthday, jewelry for Christmas, expensive dinner for the anniversary. Don't get me wrong, each of those are important, but they're expected-it's a given that you'll do something for each of those occasions. But what about the hundreds of days between those occasions? That is the time when the real, romantic champions show their stuff.

What does it take to be a romantic champion, though? Well, for one it takes a little practice. It also takes some time, forethought, and a little creativity. Combined, those may sound like a lot, but trust me, it will be well worth it. And besides, this isn't something that you should do too often: spontaneity done every day becomes the norm. What we're shooting for here is abnormal. The good kind of abnormal, though, not the weird, awkward kind. Abnormal can do wonders for a relationship, whether it be an unexpected trip to the city for the weekend, a small, surprise gift, or just remembering that your significant other likes their macaroni and cheese with Velveeta instead of the crummy powdered cheese.

What does mac and cheese have to do with winning points with your partner, though? Going the extra step to show him/her that you are thinking about them, and then acting on that with something that they can see/touch/smell will communicate both your affection and your desire to prove that affection. In other words, it's much like the difference between having someone wish you a merry Christmas, and that same person showing that merriment by giving you a Christmas present. That token makes a difference, and it shows you that they care.

If you're having trouble thinking of things to do for your special someone, then follow these easy steps.

1) Write down a list of the things that they like. The list doesn't have to include particularly extravagant items/tokens, just simple things that you know will go over positively. This list could include special bakery cookies, an old movie that he/she has always talked about, a subscription to a favorite magazine, a car wash at a detail shop, cleaning the garage, or a professional massage.
2) Consider the list, and choose three items. Within the next month, plan to do those three things. Don't automatically go for the hardest/most detailed items-that way you won't become overwhelmed. Remember, simple is fine just as long as it's not simplistic.
3) Spread those three things out over a month, and do them!

As with anything, the more you do it the better you become. Try this once, and you'll see that it isn't as hard or as time consuming as it looks. Keep it up, and your significant other will soon declare you a romance champion!
